[9th] December: Skulsyr – Blodrengr

TheOld Ways” (read: wicca) are reinterpreted into a occult ritual noise ‘ensemble’ manned by one individual—Samantha, known from T.O.M.B. and Dreadlords. Skulsyr is her solo-project; whose intent seem to mixture Coven ritualism through experimentation with blackened noise and dark ambient. Intriguingly enough, the word “Syr” is a nickname for the Norse goddess Freya’s magical swine—a ‘Hildisvin’ (battle-boar). ‘Syr’ can also mean “sow“. Either “Skul” is referring to World of Warcraft, or something out of the Prose Edda, though a deeper intention of the name might not be thought out. It must be related in one way or another to neo-paganism and Norse mythology to a certain degree—but Wiccan solemnization runs through like a drawn line in red. The year goes around in seasonal festivals—different holidays for different months.

She’s actualized for Ljudkalendern with an exclusive track newly produced for that purpose for 9th December. The track was recorded during Samhain—a sabbat where you generally celebrate those who’ve passed on. So the ritualistic tone was already set, considering what month it was recorded in: November. Although a solo-project, her track which is called “Blodrengr” (Blood Warrior) was created together with Duncan McLaren (Enneract) on vocals, Samantha can be heard banging a tribal drum and she’s conjured a hazy atmosphere which lets you delve into a maze of brooding, sinister but captivating music. From Duncan’s eerie distant chanting to an ever so present drumming, fading away into otherworldly hymns created on what sounds like thin air—as the gloomy cloud disperses. It might be so poetic that it actually does not need any poem because it’s self-descriptive.

Here a ritual begins and ends in the blink of an eye, though at great length. Tomorrow here will be another track but for the 9th December this place is reserved for Skulsyr and her track “Blodrengr“.

Exclusive Premiere: Sektor 304 & DEATHSTENCH – A Plague Of Blind Eyes

Yearly, a compilation whose name changes as the year change, take a hold between Malignant Records and Kalpamantra. Both labels have been dabbling in the dark ambient underground, housing names that with time have been forces to reckon with. Not only that, but also death-industrial, power electronics, noise and many other genres get the treatment they deserve from these two much revered labels. These series of compilatory releases started back in 2012, when “Malignant Antibodies” – the first compilation to start it off – was released digitally. Thirty-one tracks, including forthcoming gargantuans within these genres, alongside with titans such as STROM.ec, Deutsch Nepal, and Navicon Torture Technologies, just to mention a few. From that day on, a rather celebratory gesture laid the foundation of a tradition which is still intact.

The second compilation was launched in 2013, titled “The Black Plague“. Which resulted in four more tracks, making it thirty-five. Included in this compilation was Trepaneringsritualen, Thomas Ekelund’s debut on a compilation having anything to do with Malignant and Kalpamantra. If anyone had foresaw what an immense impact he would have a year or two after that, this would be prophetic. Abandoned Asylum, one of the newcomers had gotten his track “Outside The Veil Of Life“, and many groups and artists returned with a bang. What came to be new for this compilation were the amount of collaborations that increased immensely, Phragments & Shock Frontier, Steel Hook Prostheses & The Scapegoat Mechanism, Collapsar & Inner Vision Laboratory. Not to mention how things were duked out, where HHY and Sektor 304 ‘fought’ it out versus one another, creating “Subliminal“. Now it officially could be considered to be a series of releases, they were two.

Now the time has come for a third endeavour for these magnificent labels. We already know that it will be titled “Endless Descent Into Oblivion“, making it “Malignant III” – a third, probably even more perfected – compilatory adventure through the sewers. Mind you, not ‘sewers’ in any derogatory fashion, just the fact that it probably will outdo the other compilations when it comes to pure disgust, nefariousness, mysticism and total annihilation. Featured in this next compilation are, in alphabetical order: Abandoned Asylum, Aderlating, Ascetic Hedonism, Caul, Collapsar, DEATHSTENCH, False Mirror, Gnawed, Hall Of Mirrors, Hypsiphrone, Inner Vision Laboratory, Isolator, Kave, Linekraft, Nyodene D, Phragments, Phelios, Sektor 304, Sewer Goddess, Skorneg, Somnium, Steel Hook Prostheses, STROM.ec, T.O.M.B., Teeth Engraved, Terra Sancta, The Scapegoat Mechanism, The Vomit Arsonist, Theologian, Trepaneringsritualen, United Front, Xiphoid Dementia and Yen Pox – in other words an even greater compilation. New and old alike, this is probably the largest compilation of its kind, when it comes to these genres.

So, I’ve gotten the perfect opportunity to exclusively premiere a track from this compilation before release. John from DEATHSTENCH told me about it and gave me the honor to light the torch. This track is one of the collaborative efforts on this release, namely that Sektor 304 and DEATHSTENCH join forces – forming the track “A Plague Of Blind Eyes” – which is as mesmerizingly tribal as it is martial. But hold on, dark ambient still has the authority intact when it comes to this track. You get to exclusively stream “A Plague Of Blind Eyes” on Repartiseraren. The compilation will be released digitally on the 8th of October by Malignant Records and Kalpamantra.

Invisible Guy and Malignant Records (sub-label Black Plagve Productions) are collaborating to give you a track from the “Third Wave Holocaust” album that T.O.M.B. released a month ago. So that you can listen to it in your dark corner of the world. Enter into a world of hurt, a world where death-industrial is the ruler and black noise is the by-product. Soothe yourself with the darker sounds, and malefic content. Be frightened, be on your toes. Woe thee that tries to cross the boundaries of this limitless introductory to a whole charred apocalypse incarnate. There is no reason for you to enter this realms when you’re on your own, but you still have the urge to see into a whole other world. Some may fall, others may fall from grace. But the mighty few will stand on their own and face their inner demons. Anyway, enough of this darkly enrichment of your inner soul. Active for over a decade and with releases on Fall of Nature, Todestrieb, and Crucial Blast, Pennsylvania’s T.O.M.B. has come to embody the spirit of what Black Plagve is and was started for, pushing sound to the extreme by taking elements of dark ambient, noise, metal and death industrial and assembling them into powerful, blackened occult rituals. Built around field recordings that consist of cemetery desecrations, live crematory incineration’s and disturbing, abandoned insane asylum ceremonies, everything is misshapen and deformed, twisted and crafted into harrowing episodes of hallucinatory, blood soaked rituals, demonic incantations, and waves of foul smelling textures.

10 tracks in total, some, such as Clairvoyant Frequencies, Electric Exorcism, or Vulgarity, with their dense reverberating churn, necrotized tones, and over modulated frequency abuse, fall into the power electronics vein. Others, such as the tribalistic Vom Voodoo, Na La Gore Na, and Tribute to Hanhua, are drenched in unholy atmospherics, with buried rhythms, clanging percussion and deathchant vocalizations. It’s all held together with a clenched, rotten fist, moving and writhing in perfect unison over its 50 time frame.

Another strong and welcome addition to the growing Black Plagve roster and a resounding reason why T.O.M.B. remains at the forefront of the “black noise” movement. Recommended for fans of MZ.412, Gnaw Their Tongues, DEATHSTENCH.
