Listen: Coarse Language – Definite Hiatus

There’s a Canadian indie-label that emerged in 2008, that have just put up a forthcoming release for digital streaming. It’s a label called Artificial Records – and their latest addition to their quick growing discography is an album called: “Definite Hiatus“, produced by Coarse Language—an artist (or group) unknown to us. A suitable description for their music would be “deranged electronica“, since the erratic beats and paranoid whispers conjure a prime setting for weirdness. One could also name it experimental minimal wave, but there are so many different influences at play so an umbrella term is hard to set for this kind of music. Not to mention how their melodies swiftly change, with dark baselines that draw out the worst sides of mankind in a musical setting. Multiple personalities, or alter-egos, which make the arrhythmic noise seem more friendly from one track to another — but be on your guard because they’re predators. Sometimes the melodies take the upper-hand but there’s always a minimalistic reminder of how shrouded, clad in spikes, dressed for destruction their environment is — thrashing melodies, relocating sound into bizarre harshness.

We’re not that interested in the psychological aspects of the sound, but rather how it is audio-visually—a thing Coarse Language seem to know how to do. They’re perfect alarmists with a subliminal message, whether it was originally intended for it to be like that, is not something to take into account. But a lot of the complexity in the sound reveal that another more obvious vein shows—a repetitive message (lyrically) which is contrasted by the sheer amount of invention—they seem to possess. If we’re wrong, they might even be playing with illusions to deceive; with their maniacally tedious passages later on in other tracks on the album. Even though it only contains six tracks, it’s a gem that you might not appreciate right away—rather when you’re able to sculpt your own interpretation of them. Introduction

Tumblr-esque aesthetics have never ever been so nauseating. We’ve seen it everywhere, and continue to see it here. But somehow Adderall Canyonly fed this appearance to the monster of the 1980’s, an American ghastly and gargantuan 1980’s beast, whose aesthetics are similar to Tumblr fast-food. One must admit that the aforementioned decade is more impressive when it comes to the aesthetics, then what Tumblr ever could deliver. It seems like this man is tired of putting out material for almost an eternity, well yeah – four years now – and not getting as much as a glance from the trendy music-press (both mainstream and the so-called ‘underground’). However, what makes the aesthetic nerve of his project even more interesting is the covers for his releases, which seem to be bright pastille-colors blended together with the adolescence of cartoons. Add that together with their rather psychedelic influences and you have a formula that they’ve settled for. If you’re not being fooled, Addreall Canyonly is the alter-ego of Wayne Longer, based out of somewhere-in-America. Probably a rather boring place, with regards to his musical fantasies. Exclusive Premiere: Os Ovni – No Time Static Hide

The clock is ticking, time is running out. We’re just here to be with you for a while. The duo Os Ovni have been releasing their delightful mixture of synth-pop, minimal synth and dream pop, also channeling other differentiating electronica that can be hard to put together – since 2010. The duo consists of Logan Owlbeemoth and Omebi Velouri, whom have been performing together beneath various experimental electronic aliases in a period of 15 years. By the way, did you know that “Os Ovni” actually means “The UFO” in Portuguese? Now you know. Back in 2010, they released the single “Something In The Sky” on Answering Machine Recordings. A year after that, they followed it up with a split-release with Modern Witch, which got placed on the label Tundra Dubs. After a lot of moving around on different labels, releasing a split with Blue On Blue and then thundering on to participate in yet another split-release with TWINS, they’ve finally settled down and decided to release an album of their own. Together with their soothing love for specific sci-fi, our cosmos and everything in between – Os Ovni have been planning a release which goes by the name of “Lets Leave Reality“. Matt Weiner of Featureless Ghost have been the overseer when it comes to the production of this particular album. Something Cold Records have gotten the honor to release this, and this is probably what further cements their wish to turn away from reality and embrace space. I must say that this record is oozing of minimalism, twirling synthesizers, space-y virtual rooms that places oneself into their cybernetic shoes. Invisible Guy has gotten the honor to premiere a single from their album, and more to come, but first up is “No Time Static Hide” – the fifth song on this eight-tracked album. You can listen and stream the song down below, so you can get more of a taste of what’s coming in November. I also asked Justin Carver of Something Cold (Records) about the release itself and what’s on the menu in the near future.

Last year you released a compilation of tracks, and now you’re going to release an album by Os Ovni. What can you tell us about this?

– I’ve been a fan of Os Ovni since I first heard their split 7″ with Modern Witch. Their music always stood out amongst other minimal electronic bands because of how harmonious their vocals were on top of very fragile synth work. I was able to meet them firsthand when they performed in Detroit for Something Cold in December of 2011. The show took place in a very weird little banquet hall in Mexicantown! Their performance blew me away, they had the most simplistic set up but filled the room with the most psychedelic synth waves. From then on out we stayed in touch and I continued to follow their releases and excellent video work they do (Tachyons+). Their track on the Something Cold compilation was one of the albums most well received tracks, so one day I told Logan when you’re ready, I’d be happy to release your debut LP. Him and Omebi agreed to let us release it for them! They are both incredibly hardworking musicians and I’m proud to be working with them.

What was the original purpose of Something Cold records?

– Simply to release new (and rediscover old) exciting music within the minimal electronic, industrial and wave underground on vinyl. I’ve been running the Something Cold parties in Detroit since 2009, so moving forward and starting a label seemed like the next logical step. My friend Jason Amm (Suction Records/Solvent) has provided an enormous amount of help with the label and helping it come together.

Since your first release has been sold out now for some time, what kind of reactions did it get?

– I was surprised with how fast it sold out and how well received it was. I’ve gotten a few emails from people who picked it up on a whim in record stores and wrote to express their enjoyment and curiosity about the label/party. It’s cool to see tracks from the LP pop up on playlists from radio shows and DJs around the world. Thankfully, while it is sold out, it’s not being price gouged on Discogs or Ebay yet!

Are you going to release anything else in the near future on Something Cold records?

– Absolutely. We’re talking to a few artists at the moment about our next releases. Expect it out around the first of this coming year. We also plan on doing a limited repress of the initial Something Cold compilation LP eventually as well.

Psychlight: Deep Space – Evil Dreams

Quantum physics? Not exactly. Rather an exploration into our widely unknown universe, in which we’re a tiny fragment of cells in comparison. The band Deep Space are searching with heart and soul, aided with psychedelia and drug-induced hallucinations, the key to the universe and our existence. In their new album “Evil Dreams“, they embark upon a trip that is both callous, but also virtually frictionless and smooth. Inject some of their ambitious adventurousness, in combination with riffs that strike a nice resemblance with their roots, in an overlaying reverberated sphere of musical landscapes. It feels like what you hear is filtered through their influences, which is constantly propped up with Pavlovian reactions that assemble an atmosphere you could only dream of in a harsh, but lucid environment. This is dedication in its purest form. Not to mention their soft-outspokenness, amidst all their psyched out rock’n’roll, which actually helps to make everything more understandable. Because they’re more focused on the general picture, which they aim to deliver to the listener, rather than taking a side. The singer becomes a narrator, as he acts like a guide throughout the music which is constantly present. Like a puppet master, it feels like the atmosphere varies in tone and general abstractness whilst he gets his messages out. Sometimes the rock’n’roll side of things takes over completely, which makes this ensemble feel like they’re rocking it out on some obscure planet. Bring back everything from the past, but make sure you’ll still contain the energy and originality yourselves, because that’s what Deep Space are doing on this release. It feels like these songs could be listened to forever, and ever. This release will be available in physical form on the 2nd of July, as a cassette limited to 175 copies, which will include a “secret” bonus track.

Review: Mong Dosus – We Are Ready

Dissecting each way of an ordinary sound-scape with their bare hands, instrumentation aside, the unconventional yet conventional approach in one, is a 2-in-1 offer. With the first track “We Are Ready“, their sheer humbleness can be felt through the chorus, while at the same time; being unafraid of anything. Proclaiming that: “We’re Mong… Dosus!“. The heavy bricks of perfectly laden psychedelia, crazily offering the best of both the rock’n’roll sphere and the punk outfit they’ve covered themselves in. It’s simple, but at the same time complex. Two worlds collide with a heavy effect, your mind is ready to be swallowed by a synthesizer gone berserk and four guys gone totally mental. As if that isn’t enough, the next song “I want my X back” is introduced with an 8-bit mayhem. The apocalyptic suddenly went out into space, covering two layers of a delusional world. When the galactic emperor meets his earthly counterpart, you can count on the punks to prevail. Heavy, fast and wicked riffs, overwrought havoc in tubes of greasy green matter. A little hint of psychedelia, but more of their quick and merciless punk hysteria. Add to that a laid out Alien singer and sufficient synthesizer, in a smoggy mess of disco balls and lights.

Spotlight: Ruined Machines & Michal Brodka – Celestial Bodies

An amazing project that you need to seek out. The project is masterminded by Ruined Machines and the artwork designer Michal Brodka. It revolves around a 12-month galactic collaboration and trip, which has already gone through The Sun, Mercury, Venus, The Moon, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and is currently at Uranus as of February. The music itself revolves around a post-rock and space-rock take of the universe, alongside with experimental instrumentals and other nice things which will be your partner on the trip. Visually, the experience is intense and the artwork is immense. Musically, its as intense, focusing on the details and abhorring the “non-detailed” pattern of musical experience at large. This is their own mission statement:

The visual artistry of Michal Brodka is paired together with the sound of Ruined Machines to create Celestial Bodies, a year-long series of twelve releases.

Over the next 365 days, twelve otherworldly artistic journeys will take shape through strict monthly production deadlines, with each collaborative result being shared with the world via the Ruined Machines Bandcamp page on the first of every month.

Each month’s final product will artistically embody a specific Celestial Body, beginning with the May 1st release of “The Sun”.

Largely an experiment, the idea behind Celestial Bodies is to see what we can come up with as a unit in a small amount of time. There is no pristine mixing, perfect technique, or completely pre-planned production. A stream of consciousness. We are creating maniacally; we enjoy the final product as if we’re hearing it for the first time. We’re on the journey just as much as everyone else is, and we can’t wait to see where it all leads.

After that, you can proceed through the different planets and enjoy your own galactic trip as interpreted by Ruined Machines. It is unfathomable why they choose to do this for free, as you get high-quality music, artwork and the whole lot for free. I suggest you spend some pennies on this or whatever currency you seem fit.
