Haunting is the first word that comes to mind when La Fete Triste and The Harrow join forces, releasing a split together with the title “Giant / Axis“. The solo-project La Fete Triste is the enigmatic and sorrowful new-wave project by Gabriel Brero, one of the men involved with aufnahme + wiedergabe, based out of Berlin (now in Hamburg). His twisted synthesizer and drum-machine-driven project derive inspiration out of both minimal synth and post-punk, coating his arms with a new-wave overlay that deliver the greatest sadness with melancholia at the middle, together with melodies that will ensnare you imminently. Add to that a guitar with concrete rhythms that adds a touch of your own dismay in the mix. Before this release, he had put out a single called “Lèvres Froides“, and he also did a split-release together with Lebanon Hanover, titled “Lebanon Hanover / La Fete Triste” where four tracks were put out. A lot of people have apparently been longing for new material for quite a while, three years to be exact. Together with The Harrow, he delves into this split-release with the track “Giant“. An at first ballad-esque track which soars through the landscape of sound with a post-punk sound with an almost anthemic touch to it. The mournful and depressive vocals with a German intonation at the end makes it a lot more impressive, because it builds up to a magnificent track because of that. An interesting anecdote is that Justin Stephens (Passion Play) is doing back-up vocals on this track, he’s produced and mixed it as well.
The Harrow, on the other hand, had delivered their first official self-titled debut on the now defunct label Function Operate last year. Even though some of their sound isn’t that emotive for me to begin with, I must say that I am impressed when I hear “Axis“, a track which breathes the otherwise so scarcely atmosphere that had been lacking before. It’s got more warmth than the earlier release of theirs, and to add insult to injury – Vanessa Irena‘s vocals attract you to their post-punk sound even more, as she adds another dimension to an otherwise good track. Making it even greater. The Harrow have been interesting in several ways before, but they haven’t really made anything that have been as great as this. Here, they show their true potential as craftsmen. Bringing their music to a whole other level together with their minimal approach to post-punk, with goth undertones that make you take it in even more. Everything is emotionless, but at the same time very emotive. A good paradox to be written upon their release as it is. Looking forward to hearing more of this kind of sound, in future releases. Being featured on compilations has its perks. silk entry have been featured on the compilation “Beko_100” in 2012, with the track “Channel 80“. The label BEKO DSL put together the collaborative effort of one-hundred artists, into a whole compilation that spans over a lot of minutes. Three months later he was featured on “The Scrap Mag 0001” with the track “Shard“. The project was originally started up some time in 2012, with his whole foot in improvisational methods in creating tracks, rather then structuring them up. Since then, he’s been pumping out tracks the latest weeks. He’s also involved in some way with the unisex clothing-line Lamirrital, whose clothes range from zebra-patterns to total black. But when it comes to this solo-project, eight tracks in the matter of a little more then two weeks have been put out. The project itself is based out of New York City, and he seems to be experimenting and having fun – rather than claiming to be a serious “electronique” musician. Some of these tracks are old and some of them are completely new. There’s not much that we know about silk entry, but we know that he produces a furious blend of electro and overly danceable electronica in a new beat, or new body, fashion. It’s something that we adore. Therefore you will be able to listen to and stream these tracks down below.
The long-awaited vinyl-release of “Matters of Life and Death” have appeared on Chondritic Sound just now, on the 4th of March, as I’m writing. Consisting of two songs from earlier releases, and two completely new songs, whom have been premiered at Pitchfork (among others) and Invisible Guy. This eccentric mixture of the best from the world of body, shaped into a dynamite-charge of industrialized evilness – have made a huge impact on those whom have taken Believer/Law for what they are – a pretty damn unique act. Add a little hint of minimal wave and other notable influences such as noise, psychedelia and experimentalism – and you’ll have the final product. The release itself is made up by 600 copies, whereas 100 are on limited white vinyl, 200 on gray and 300 on regular black. The digital album costs 7 dollars and the physical LP costs 15 dollars. A must-have for anyone even remotely interested in their music, and for those whom are interested in the resurgence of new body mixed with industrial elements. The tracks are as follow: “Ashes“, “War Story“, “The Task At Hand” and “Contrition“. New York, or Neo-York, if you’d go with new beat meet industrial vibes. Belgium haven’t been so far away since they once launched their much appreciated genre of “new beat“, together with iconic acts such as A Split-Second or the Dutch equivalent L.A. Style, with their less body-beat and/or EBM-inspired sound, borrowing more from danceable techno. If we use the definition of the underground culture that was launched in Western Europe, the pioneering of an underground music subculture. The term itself was also used as a collective term in the U.S., for different electronic styles. So it’s not by chance that Videograve emerged out of the blue, in 2011 with their debut-album “Slum Electric” released by and on Living Tapes. Lending a whole new face to the style itself, infusing it with a cybernetic form of industrial atmosphere – into the whole she-bang. Two years later, “Strange Menagerie” came out on the same label. Which might’ve been what sparked my interest in this duo as such, from the beginning. The two members, Danny Riley and Mitch Patrick have taken it a whole other way then for example Schwefelgelb, whom are also scanning the territory close to New Beat, but not into the same realm as them.
With this in mind, Invisible Guy can offer you a collaboration that was done by Videograve together with Neud Photo. This track is rather elusive, rhythmic and robotic. Combining the different areas that they work within, as the more cybernetic new beat with hints of industrial is mixed with an even more melodic side. Even though a little bit of Neud Photo has been put into the mix, the atmosphere itself is harsh and it introduces you both to the sublime monotony in rhythm, but at the same time pierce your ears and enter the divine – with angelic melodies in the background. The track is titled “Space Street” and is made available to you all to listen to and stream, exclusively on Invisible Guy. Missing out on two years ago is not such a big deal. But once you find something that simply attaches itself into your mind, you want to show it to the world – no matter how many years on its neck it might have. The largely existential project Life Is Pain is the solo endeavor of an unknown character from New York. His influences range from Arthur Schopenhauer‘s stance on suicide, which is that it’s not wrong at all or born out of cowardice, since; “They tell us that Suicide is the greatest piece of Cowardice. That Suicide is wrong; when it is quite obvious that there is nothing in this world to which every man has a more unassailable title than to his own life and person“. This project also harkens from the depths of atmospheric dark wave, to the less intriguing blend with melodious cold wave – to the more exciting metamorphosis from experimentalism to post-punk, goth and minimal synth. Even though the more melodic parts make you shy away from the project, the absoluteness of the darkness that can be derived from the absolutely soul-wrecking topics that are brought up make you turn the other cheek and face it towards “Born, Suffer, Die…”, which is the two-tracked release that is talked about above. Featuring the two tracks “Unassailable” and “Sindrome“. Unfortunately, he hasn’t released anything else then this, but this might help spark interest in what he’s been working with before. MERX is a moniker that is made up by a half of German Army. Yes, that’s correct, the German Army that I’ve covered not too long ago when they released their album “Last Language“. You could probably figure out that yourself, since a lot of the sound resembles their super-group. MERX latest album “20000 Sq Ft Under The Sea” was re-issued by Permanent Records – whom also put out “Merx“, their self-titled debut. What makes this release an oddity, though, is their classic post-punk mixed with the remnants of the late 80’s New Yorkish no-wave. These Los Angeles hounds are not easily moved or impressed, but they share a lot of influences that can be recovered from that particular decade. Combine that with the cold harnessed touch of cold wave, and you’re set for you trip into megalomaniac territories. Even though their debut was more cleanly shaven and post-punkish at its core, these post-punkers care not to delve into old cliches. Cris-crossing genres is a sport they would gladly engage in. Even engaging in such outlandish behavior as to combine the industrial electronics into the minimal, but cynical – mess. As you delve into their landscape, fear not the no-wave sound, because these heroin-fueled dreams become a longing – as the clinking guitars and groovy baseline catch you (and your breath). Breathe when you’re near, because they have a terrible odor. Cherish the time you had without them, but please remain seated during this experience. From the western world of America, primarily New York, to the eastern realms of Croatia. Two worlds have met when Neud Photo and Zarkoff decided to let each other off the hook. Zarkoff got the chance to totally rework Neud Photo’s gloomier “Dimensions“-track, which has been out since a year ago. This time he used Iva Viskovic, a melancholic pop-queen, to enhance the peppier side of synth-pop. Even though the melancholic vibes can be felt, this rework is a lot more melodic and less atmospheric in a sense. Maybe it’s for the best, maybe it’s for the worst. The listeners don’t have to agree, but this is how Sasha Rajkovic (Zarkoff) have interpreted the original song, through his own lens. On a release that is called “Dimensions/Famous Grouse“, the reworked track is standing tall on the A-side of things – whilst his underground techno track “Famous Grouse“, is representing the Zagreb underground, packaged to the rest of the world – for them to hear. Kraftjerkz, a label from the US run by one guy – was the one that decided to put this release out. A year earlier, the track that you’re about to hear that is reworked, was released in its original shape by them. This is a time when the world is clashing, and what is better than to embrace it by reworking a track and making it into another version? I think you’ll have to listen to it for yourself if you want to believe it. It’s a tell-tale story that can easily be approached by the excitement of the listener.
