The mastodon release of a compilation overview of the evolution in the Dunedin underground, is courtesy of the fantastic New Zealand micro-label Fishrider Records – whom I’ve had featured both in interview and with bands from the roster – now with a newcomer called Ba Da Bing Records, for outreach of the compilation in North America. This compilation features a narrowly selected crowd of people which you’d know about if you had payed attention to New Zealand. There’s a town there, a town called Dunedin, where a lot of pop-artists and groups have emerged during the last few years. Specifically from 2011-2014. Mavis Gary, Death & The Maiden, The Prophet Hens, Males, Mr Biscuits, Opposite Sex, Strange Harvest, The Shifting Sands, Astro Children, Kane Strang, Scattered Brains of the Lovely Union and Trick Mammoth – are the selected few (many) from this underground current, standing strong with their oddities that are by now their trademark. The reason why you need to have your eyes peeled is just because their sound is different, their sound is as a whole unique for that particular city. Nowhere else can you find this unimaginable creative outlet which have rendered in a sound they can proudly call their own.
Not only does this release incorporate a nice and thick black vinyl, it also is the starting point of a zine called T E M P O R A R Y – yes, just like the release. Even though I feel like the name is ironic, because I feel like this will be a timeless release, even though I haven’t laid my ears to listen to everything on the release yet. The zine features an introductory into the bands, artists and groups that are featured on the release. Repartiseraren can give you an exclusive premiere of two new tracks which were put up by Fishrider Records, it’s “Flowers For The Blind” with Death & The Maiden and “Supermarket” – a long-awaited new track for me here, courtesy of Opposite Sex.
I must congratulate Ian Henderson for this seemingly masterful release, because it was something in dire need of documenting for the rest of the world. The slick design was created by Robbie Morton and the graphic layout by Angus McBryde. Mastered by Tex Houston and tracks selected by Ian Henderson – as it should be – because that man has more insight into this than anyone else. When scouring the web for something interesting and new, you rarely find what you’re seeking – if you’re even seeking anything out, at all. Sometimes, you stumble upon something that is greater than the genres that can be attributed to the music at hand. Schwefelgelb is one of those exceptions. I happened to find them in connection with an earlier Gooiland Elektro release, titled “Dunkel Vor Den Augen Uns“, which contained a lot of great songs despite being a four-tracked EP. Which in turn made me interested in finding out more about them, as I had read a couple of lines in different interview with them. One of the most interesting thing is that they have a conceptual approach, which in turn make their presence even more noticeable. Even though my thoughts might be a wee bit disorganized, I decided to ask a few questions to Sid and Eddy – the core of Schwefelgelb itself. Hope you enjoy it, and have a Merry Christmas!

Női Kabát is one of the most interesting acts coming out of Europe in these times. It consists of three people, namely Dee Rüsche (Lungs / Metal), Owen Pratt (Synthesis / Noise) and Jonas Ranssøn (Simmons / Live Drums). One of the unique things that have shaped them is the fact that they’re situated in different cities. Considering the fact of how hard it is to keep something going, when you live so far away from each other. Yet, they’ve managed to strike the public with their immerse first release “Make Room! Make Room 7¨“, which was released by aufnahme + wiedergabe. It sold out very quickly. The music itself is bordering on synth-pop, new beat and cold wave – to name a few genres which have set root with them. Since people began to talk about them, revere them with kind words, they set out upon a Summer-tour in Europe. It’s when I came in to the picture. After reading a few interviews that had been conducted with them, learning a bit more about them, it felt like I missed something. Therefore, I decided to get in touch with them and do an interview with them. This is probably one of the more in-depth interviews out there, so I hope you learn something new and like what you’re reading. Or you might hate it, for all I know. But I did my best. Things are happening in North America. Namely in Los Angeles, where the sweet label Sweating Tapes is situated. Currently on the way of releasing a limited edition 12¨ split-vinyl with the Los Angeles bands Bestial Mouths and Deathday, together with the European label desire. It’s the first release from them since October, when they released their second compilation “A Compilation Volume 2: The Bay Area“. Since then, there haven’t been as much action on at least the release-front, so the machinery seems to be up at full speed once again. Their split-release feature four tracks, two of each band, and is limited to 500 copies with a two-colored insert, also including download when bought. It costs 13 USD and ships on around the 2nd of April, the digital release for it is on the 26th of March. You can read a summary of the both bands by Jerome from desire below. Pooling together a group of influences as diverse as its members, BESTIAL MOUTHS present a raw, synth-driven energy propelled by singer Lynette Cerezo’s powerful vocals. Often likened to Diamanda Galas, Siouxsie Sioux or Lydia Lunch, Cerezo delivers each note with fury and abandon. Synthesists/keyboardists Christopher Myrick and Gustavo Aldana channel early industrial, EBM, goth and minimal synth pop in turns, blending harsh electronics and lush melodies. When fused to Aldana’s splintered programmed beats and the tribal rhythms and samples of drummer Jessica Reuter, the harmonics combine to breathe new life into post punk, weaving their own distinct creation in the process. Bestial Mouths has released an album on Dais Records.
Constructed from the aggressive textures of early industrial music, the ambience of coldwave, & the carnal energy of post-punk, DEATHDAY blends dark and often esoteric images with sparse, primal analog sounds. The quartet has recently contributed tracks to Downwards’ So Click Heels, Mannequin’s The End Of Civilization compilations.
Deathday’s self-titled debut will be reissued on limited white vinyl later this year via Sweating Tapes & desire.
