Review: Various Artists – Artificial Selections

a3207601573_10More then a week ago, a new compilation emerged out of the alternative underground. A compilation that caught people off guard because of the beautiful representation of cold-wave, post-punk and experimental selections – including a wider variation of genres. Featuring both unrepresented artists and those who are not. First off are Excuses, the solo-project by Matthew Rowe whose debut was put out on the now defunct label Function Operate, back in 2012. This self-titled release featured five songs but his contribution to the compilation was with the track “We Are Fuel“. It is a raw track which lets a dodgy atmosphere with shoegaze fill out the sound-scape, together with the ambivalent riffing you’d only find within darker post-punk. Although his vocals on this song isn’t up to par with the rest of the landscape of sound, it is held up by the general mood that he delivers with sincerity. I just wish it was coupled with a better vocal representation because right now it sounds too cheesy. But I must say that it is a good opener which sets the bar for the rest of the compilation higher up.

Listen: Image Of Life – Last Letters From The Leper Colony

a3010912489_10

Having only been available on self-released cassettes and vinyls, the original debut-album by Los-Angeles based nihilist-pop act Image Of Life has been put up on bandcamp in its entirety. This album features twelve tracks recorded in between 2010-2012. The A-Side was recorded in June of 2011 to October of 2012, whilst the B-Side was recorded as early as October and November of 2010. Since the cassette was limited to only 45 copies, it was hard to obtain for those interested since it sold out pretty quickly. The second edition, a vinyl-edition released in conjunction with the Pure Ground tour in Europa some months ago – was released in an edition of 90 copies, by Image Of Life himself. Since I interviewed him in 2013, when he released his “Weight Loss In Wartime / Walking In The Dark” single on Chondritic Sound, not much have been heard about him more than being featured in occasional articles. So it comes as a glad surprise that he chose to do this so you can stream the whole release digitally, before you consider buying the cassette. Since it seems like there’s a new cassette-run of 15 limited copies of this original release “Last Letters From The Leper Colony“. Stream it down below and consider buying it if you like what you hear.

The Salzburgian label Rainberg Verlag has just released a six-tracked compilation titled “Rites Ov Summer“, featuring completely new songs from Jännerwein, Solblot, Truthful Fields, Moineau, Vurgart and Bund Neuland. Celebrating summer, celebrating the warmth, now that is is slowly becoming Autumn. This is a must have for everyone that like the folkish tunes of differentiating European acts, it is also for everyone that likes their music to be free. At least, for now, the compilation is free to download. But I suggest you pinch in with money if you like what you are hearing. Stream and listen to it down below.

Premiär: Per Nyström – Europa

per_omslag_itunes_lilla

For nearly two decades Per Nyström has been hiding in bands like The Concretes, Mackaper, Diagnos and Monster. During the years we’ve seen him perform on in so many constellations and in so many bands with an always outstanding and precise Per way of playing his keyboards. The tone and inner melody of Per Nyström is one of his very own. You can hear it clearly in the songs of all his previous bands. And after about three years of begging him to dig out some tracks of his rare solo recordings for a release, behold Nattarbete! The release is a collection of songs for theater, film and art projects that were all recorded at home by Per. Musically it builds upon the history of connecting minimalism with kraut rock, not very far from Michael Rother’s Sterntaler and David Borden’s Music For Amplified Keyboard Instruments. The oversized cassette box release has six songs on a C23 tape.

Det fjärde släppet ligger längre in i framtiden, då två singlar återstår.

Feature: novva falla – other tracks / Tapes of Valkenburg

888805122-1

Well, it’s the first feature ever on Invisible Guy! Or, maybe not, but certainly the first that’s titled in that manner. The man Adam der Somnambule, have been keeping up with the minimalism within his heart. He’s released two tapes, almost simultaneously, with one week apart. First up is “other tracks“, with essentially is his collection of tracks recorded in between 2011 and 2012, for the series ‘Minimal In 30 Minutes’. Besides that, it’s dedicated to Peter Ratajczyk, also known by the name of ‘Peter Steele’ – the now deceased (R.I.P.) frontman of Type O Negative. The next one is “Tapes of Valkenburg“, which has an historical connotation attached to it. Valkenburg Castle was a castle in the Netherlands, which was erected in the year of 1115 by Gosewijn I, Lord of Valkenburg. However, this wooden fortification was destroyed in 1122, when it came under siege by Henry V, the Holy Roman Emperor. It was originally built by Lord van Suilen en Anholt. Which is pretty cool, since I love historical anecdotes or homages of any sort. This album is dedicated to the late Japanese film director 黒澤 明 (Akira Kurosawa).

When it comes to the tapes themselves, they have different nuances. The aforementioned, “other tracks“, is more of a calm and seething minimalistic wave piece. Sometimes speedy, other times somnambulant and bewildered. Somewhat melodic, but at the same time monotonic. Which differentiates in between the segments of each track, leaving room for respite. On the other hand, “Tapes of Valkenburg” – seem to be more primitive at heart. Leaving a more industrial-oriented setting for the macabre landscape that is building up, slowly – from within. It’s also got a much ‘warmer’, but at the same time ‘colder’ approach – to the beats and general fortification of the sound-scape at hand. The rhythms are more benevolent and connected, then it is in the aforementioned tape. However, both are available for purchase if you’re interested in this kind of music. “other tracks” is strictly limited to 50 copies of C40 tapes, whilst “Tapes of Valkenburg” comes with the same amount of copies, but with a C60 tape instead. Both of them cost 7 euro. Listen to them below and make up your own mind.
