Listen: Veil Of Light – Pale Eyes

The day has come when Veil Of Light finally got the run-up to his forthcoming debut-album released. Together with the Swedish label Beläten, five remixes and one original track have been put up digitally. Since there’s still about a month left until “Ξ” – the full album signed Veil Of Light. A.R.M., Ghost Actor, S S S S, Distel and Th. Thot have remixed four tracks — five if you include “Pale Eyes” — from the forthcoming album, which are “Falling Apart“, “Martyr“, “In Ruins” and “They Said“. When judging on the only available track, it feels great to realize how far he’s come from his earlier releases. It seems like he’s matured even more and the music sounds more organic. Even though a drum-machine is present at all times, the riffs seem even more melancholic, when tuning in to “Pale Eyes“.

Judging from the remixes, they’ve all done a great job in their own peculiar way. Even though my preferred remixes have been created by Distel and Th. Thot – the others are okay if you like subdued atmospheres. S S S S are more like Distel, keeping the mythic environment alive and shapeshifting away from the calmness. Abiding by no other rules than what is set up by the rhythm. The industrialized mammoth that is coated with a layer of noisyness feels like smoke clouding your eyesight – you’re caught in the middle of a tense situation. Distel on the other hand keep at their signature sound, keeping their original rhythms but straying away from the atonal sound for a more melodic chanson. The melodies are otherwise not as prominent and clean. When you get to the end, the deep baseline takes you out of bound and into a completely meditative setting.

The favorite of all remixes is clearly stated by Herr Thot himself. Th. Thot is Thomas himself, stirring up a whirlwind together with a static rhythm and simple melody that slowly progresses and in itself give an added value to the song. Now that I haven’t heard the original track, it is hard to state how true it is. But I really like how the manipulated vocals add a layer of melody and harmonics – that wouldn’t pack the same punch without it. All in all it’s a wonderful free release that Beläten is generous enough to give out before the “real” release is put out to the masses. Not to mention how the combination of emerging artists and steadfast champions make it a total brawl. Veil Of Light will release his debut-album “Ξ” on the 7th of November which will be the first ever vinyl-release Beläten have ever done. Exclusive Premiere: Hadewych – Riss

From darkened shamanistic rituals in pre-medieval ages, to the futuristic hopefulness of ritual ambient. Somewhere in between that and if you slice a big portion out of it, you’ll find avant-garde to be a part of their repertoire. Hadewych is just that, somewhere in between the looming avant-gardist ritual ambient, but with undertones of primal rock’n’roll with metal. When their debut-album emerged back in 2007, they were more concentrated on neo-folk then anything else. Somehow, they combined the efforts of their industrialist past maxi-single “Ende” from 2004 with the urge for something new in 2014. Therefore the release I’m about to talk about now have some roots found within it that can be hinted back to their latest release up to date, called “Ēoh” which featured a mix of old rehearsals to proper new tracks. It’s a perfect transition to what’s to be called “Nu“, where they break their old bonds and move forward into the sound which they’ve concocted over the years. It has somehow always been present in one way or another, but simply not been formulated good enough to have been harnessed earlier. Black Horizons is the label they’ve set out to be a part of with their forthcoming release, as it is being put out on a limited cassette by that label. With clever signatures like Hodiamont, Jongen, Scramasax and Lucia. M Peter Nÿland or Nÿland II as he is credited as on “Ēoh” – have the world at their feet. Some of these members have also contributed to a track on the acclaimed compilation “The Totality Of Death” by Trepaneringsritualen (Thomas Ekelund). So no wonder if any of their influences might’ve been caught up from Thomas Ekelund. Peter Nÿland is also a part of the mysterial duo Distel, which have also garnered their following with releases as “Puur” and “Ultra2012“.

Now when they’re almost ready to be put out on Black Horizons on the 79th release on that label, things looked bright for Repartiseraren. I got the opportunity to pick a track from this three-tracked release, whereas it so happened that I chose the dark side. With that I mean the atmosphere of this track is so baseless yet fluid, as it is backed up with organic instrumentation which is not electronic to the least, or so it seems. A gloomy landscape which is complemented by the whispering of Peter Nÿland and his authoritarian voice. Since it’s featured on the B-Side of this cassette (C18), there’s a notable difference from this one and the other tracks – even though it can be contested that they’re dark too. But this is something difference. The slow build from a drone-ish landscape moving forward with a complex rhythm that suddenly slides through the landscape at a macabre speed – not to be confused with tempo – is enough to love it to your heart’s delight. You can find virtually every piece of equipment and more than that with this track. Everything from classical instruments to different musical instrument you might not find anywhere else. Or not utilized as good. As the wind is breaking through the landscape of sound, I gratefully present to you an exclusive track called “Riss“, a track that will take you into a whole different mood and also play with your sense of belonging. Listen: Keluar – Keluar

After having spent my days in another country, on an island, I listened very much to what I got handed to me by Keluar. This was some time before “Vitreum” was due to be out on Desire Records, so that’s precisely what I was listening to. The combination in arms between Sid Lamar of Schwefelgelb and Zoé Zanias of ex-Linea Aspera is such a damn great collision of the best of worlds. Now they’ve just put up their self-titled album release “Keluar“, which combines their both EPs “Ennoea” (the first) and “Vitreum” into one – alongside two bonus tracks “Cleo (Soft Riot Remix)” and “Coralline (Distel Remix)“. Which is a joint release that was also put out by Desire Records. When it comes to their sound, I believe that I am in love. The craftsmanship that both of these people enjoy is formed into a luminescent landscape in a combination of minimal synth, wave and the experimentalism that they themselves put onto it. If you combine that with the strength in melody that new wave gives them, you’ve got a dreamy landscape which shapes the forthcoming lights that shine upon your face – as in a kind of religious experience. Every little detail that is chiseled out is part of a wider array of magnificence. Most of the songs are actually of that caliber that you’d simply want to listen to them over and over again, remembering each tracks unique character. With a little help from the new-beat meets darker electronic body music (but really not), they channel our darker sides and manage to shape a current of volatile electricity that is about to snap and crackle, but then suddenly something else enters the landscape of sound and circumvents that intention.

The lyrical content of this album is also astonishing. Everything blends in well with the form of vocals that Allison Lewis decide to deliver. Sharp contrasts in between outdrawn sighs of lyric content to the almost despaired cries of misanthropy. With the ambiance that creates a shroud of mystery around it, her voice pierces the bubble in which the shroud is covering – showcasing the naked truth from inside – with her clarity and deliverance that signifies what she’s all about. She’s in for it all and can’t wait to strike you down when you least expect it, whether it might be after a crescendo of electronic beats or the suggestive atmosphere delivered with a percussionists precision. I urge you all to buy this album if you really like it, because it might be one of the best albums since Distel entered once again and got their album “Ultra2012” put out on Beläten. Giving me a grip once again to embrace electronica that has that experimental touch and can deliver what it is said to, or even more than what I’m introduced to. Invisible Guy and Beläten presents: Strife and Fight – an Invisible Guy mixtape!

Visions and Light, Shadow Rite and now – Strife and Fight. These three names have something in common, and that is the fact that they’re a part of the same mix tape-series. Beläten and Invisible Guy go way back. They’ve worked with each other for a number of years by now, delivering something extra for the readership of this blog-zine each time. Years have gone, and this is one of the few things that really remain. Last time, when “Shadow Rite” got introduced, the mixtape was mixed by Th. Thot of Beläten, himself. It got received very well with everyone, and everyone else. This time, Invisible Guy himself steps up to the plate to show that he can mix, too. Well, since it’s only a mixtape and not a mix, you might get the picture. The difference about this mixtape, from the last, is the fact that everything you’ll hear here constitutes the six recent releases on Beläten and nothing else. That means that every release from 2014 so far, have been jam-packed into this mixtape. You’ll get familiar with Grand Mal x, Dmitry Distant and Distel – from the first tape-batch – and Blitzkrieg Baby, Sebastian Melmoth and L’Avenir – from the latest. The name for this mixtape will be “Strife and Fight“, because I’ve strafed and fought my way when doing this mixtape. Pick up your strength, fire off a right-hook right into solar plexus, because now you’re a fighter. Fight your way through and make yourself a name. Throughout militant martial pop, pseudo-something with a large dose of psychedelia, clamoring electro with a hard-hitting hammer to a beat, weirdly X-files related synthesizer delight, angst-pop in its finest manifestation, and finally – melodious and angelic synth-pop.

This is not from Sweden with love, nor are we in Bromley, if you catch my drift. This is from Sweden with pure hate, from Sweden whose dark forces assemble once again. We’re ready for a fight and we’re willing to take it, we’re ready to strike. If you’re weak, this is not the recommended remedy for you. Since this is a rather harsh mix-tape, this is rather a remedy for all those passive souls that reside within Sweden. Yes, you know who you are and you might find this serum useful. Find yourself in this Fight Club-esque hommage from Beläten and Invisible Guy, strictly put together by Invisible Guy himself. You know that we mean business when this happens, because he rarely, if ever – touches it and brews himself. Now it’s brewing over and you’ll have to endure it with your strengthened skin. Take a jab at me, but before that, start this mix-tape by hitting the “play”-button. You will live through it.

Strife and Fight – this is the end of the line. Invisible Guy hasn’t gotten to mix these former mix-tapes that took the name of “Visions and Light“, to begin with, and “Shadow Rite“, to end with. He’s since then taken the torchbearers’ torch and lit the flame himself. Th. Thot is no longer in charge, he only deliver the supplies. Exclusive Premiere: Distel – Japanese Eyes

Just when you thought it would’ve ended, it just started. You might’ve anticipated this, but for a later release, not up on Invisible Guy at all. They take it to a whole other level with their grainy angst-pop, filling it to the brink with menacingly sublime chants, rumbling baselines and shockingly heavy drums. That’s how it goes when the unorthodox mixture of minimalism, noise and dark wave gets taken to a whole other level. Welcome to the world of urban Tokyo meets the feudal Japan. Knitting together both in one atmosphere, making it even more fascinating as you try to decipher what it’s all about. You get the interpretative prerogative, lent to you all so easily by Distel. Yes, it was them whom you’ve all waited for so long. Since their release; “Puur“, on Enfant Terrible last year, you couldn’t hold it together and simply wanted some more. At least a sign of life, a sign of a new release on the horizon. That’s what you all got, but you didn’t get to hear anything.

It was only one label who could proceed to take the task of releasing their tracks after their presence on Enfant, and who could it be if not: Beläten. As this cassette is the third of the three cassettes that are being released in the near future, this atmospheric and sublime entrance into a new world of Distel, is pleasantly arriving so you can enjoy them when they’ve taken off their masks. Their stature in the catalog is of the runic inscription, and rune itself, Peorð (). It denotes the sound “p” in the Elder Futhark runic alphabet, and goes by the aforementioned name in the Anglo-Saxon rune poem. It does, however, not appear in the Younger Futhark. The meaning of this word in Germanic could be referring to: “pear-tree”, in the context of “recreation and amusement”. Well, I’m here to tell you, it might be amusing and interesting to get something new out of this duo, but it sure as hell doesn’t display anything amusing. No, its cloudy, sublime and horrifying. But its mystique is what makes you wander into their world all to much, just to have the trap-door shut right behind you. It’s enigmatic and sullen.

But enough of the talking, let’s get to business. Invisible Guy is proud to give you the track “Japanese Eyes” from the forthcoming release “Ultra2012“, that is being put out there for the world by Beläten on the 31st of January. This is probably one of the most anticipated releases, since you folks got a hold of the news that it’s actually coming out. One thing must be told, and that is that five of the tracks are interpretations on Mekanik Komando, and only one is an original track by them. This is because they wanted to pay homage to the Ultra movement of the late 70’s and 80’s, all this was encompassed by the first of four Ultra2012 events that were held in Dutch cities in 2012. If you know this background-story, it would be good to check out “Japanese Eyes” by Mekanik Komando, an electropunky and funky trip that was unleashed with the “It Would Be Quiet In The Woods If Only A Few Birds Sing” album, from 1981. But you now get the opportunity to stream and listen to the interpretation that Distel made of the track “Japanese Eyes“, as you can stream it exclusively from Invisible Guy and we hope that it will make your day a little bit better, or worse. After last years’ magnificent Puur LP on Enfant Terrible, Distel return with a cassette featuring five interpretations of Mekanik Kommando and one original composition, all made for the first of four Ultra2012 events held across four Dutch cities in 2012.

Performers were asked to in some way pay homage to the original Ultra movement of the late 70’s and early 80’s, and Distel choose to do so by covering five songs from Mekanik Kommando’s debut LP »It Would Be Quiet In The Woods If Only A Few Birds Sing« from 1981. The closing original Onde was used as a sort of theme song for their performance at the event in Nijmegen.

In the hands of Distel these songs are transformed from jittery white-boy punk-funk into menacing, pulsating krankheitspopmusik Robotic voices call from deep beneath the layers of thundering bass. Euphoric rave arpeggios pierce through the din of squealing analog synthesizers and urges the listener to dance, or at the very least move in unison.

Beläten have long been a proponent of Invisible Guy, or at least as long as we’ve been collaborating with each other. Thomas Ekelund is the head of this gargantuan Swedish label. It seems larger then it is, but it actually is what it seems. Invisible Guy have been a proponent of Beläten, since it’s one of the best and most exquisite labels today. It also makes me proud that it comes out of Sweden, my homestead. Earlier, he’s mixed the mixtape “Visions and Light“. This mixtape is the second one in these unofficial “series“. With 50% forthcoming material that’s going out on Beläten later this year, mixed with the majestic wonders of aufnahme + wiedergabe, La Forme Lente, Malignant Records and Avant!. With a great feature, which you’ll enjoy – a world premiere for a Trepaneringsritualen track, which will be out on Malignant Records later this year. Dance in the flaming pyre, embrace the rites of power, thrown into barren landscapes – is your ego being annihilated, in the Shadow Rite.

Invisible Guy and Beläten constitute some of the most powerful forces coming out of Sweden as we speak. Which brings me to introduce this collaboration with Beläten to you people, so that you can enjoy some exclusive songs from forthcoming releases.
