[8th] December: Red Mecca – Sunny Day

A decade turned into another, quickly the 1980’s faded into oblivion and the 1990s was born—Cabaret Voltaire had their release “Red Mecca” put out on CD via Restless Records and Mute Records. Nine years earlier that album was released on Rough Trade Records, being a their fourth album if you ignore the “Live At The Y.M.C.A. 27.10.79” and “Live At The Lyceum” releases. Fast-forward eight years from 1990 and you get 1998—the same year Jan Strandqvist release a maxi-single under the name Red Mecca. Coincidence? I think not. We think there’s little doubt that Cabaret Voltaire’s name of their fourth album influenced him, when it came to choosing the name of his project. The maxi-single was called “Please Goddess” and got produced during the time Telegram Records Stockholm existed, first an independent Swedish label started in 1987, in the end of the 1990’s sold to Warner Music’s sub-division to WEA (Warner Elektra Atlantic). Now since some time back a defunct label.

During the time-period where the label was still at least going forward, Red Mecca put out a song called “Underground” which was, at least for the Warner Music Sweden-release, written by Eric Svensson—co-founder of Sidelake Studios, gold & platinum selling producer and songwriter. When this solo-project which we suppose could be attributed to Jan Strandqvist alone, with some reservations, was in its first stages—the focus laid on House-music from what we can tell. A huge step away from what Red Mecca was to become, but we’re getting there. A maxi-CD called “Love Is A Savage Thing“, featuring the track with the same name and remixes of it, including a new version of “Underground” as a fourth track—Maria Ritzén of Stone Soul Picnic were the vocalist. The project itself seemed to be more of a project for Eric S as he is credited for remixing, but it’s hard to see where Jan comes in after this. Telegram Records closed down and went defunct. We’re in the 2000’s now, where it changed from the 21st Century to a millennium.

The project wasn’t activated again until 2013. The same year, Frida Madeleine contributes to a Massproduktion compilation of interpretations by local creators for their latest vinyl-releases, the track is named “Frostjackan“—originally written and performed by the Swedish pop-band Indi. Somewhere along the lines they found one another and re-activated a long lost project which hadn’t been touched since 2000. Thirteen years later Frida Madeleine becomes the singer of Red Mecca—Jan Strandqvist the producer and machine-operator. The project changes completely from House to a combination of darkwave and indie-pop. The album “You Were Never Here” is released on Massproduktion as a CDr, featuring six tracks, one track called “Love & Hate“—with music by Anders Brodin, Henrik Brodin, Jan Strandqvist, Mikael Svensk and Peter Byström. Track three and four was written by Bonnie Rabson. Roughly a year later a proper album is released under the name “Covered With Rain“. The lyrics for all the songs are now written by Frida Madeleine, and she also made the music for “When It’s Empty“—the opening track. Jan Strandqvist produces the release, creates the cover together with Robert Persson, as photographed by Izabelle Englund. The label artwork was created by Catherine Fandén. Mastered at Cutting Room by Mats Lindfors. Let’s leave the technical aspects now.

With their wondrous sound, gloomy and virtuous atmosphere, they create some kind of warmth which sucks you into the music. They’re an unbreakable duo that have just released a new b-side from their latest album, called “Endless – Highest Mountain On Mars Remix“. Now they’re featured in Ljudkalendern for the 8th December with an unreleased track they’ve had laying around. A humble but ultimately beautiful song which goes by the name of “Sunny Day“—a crash-course in complete melancholia. Here they show more of their darkwave-side and less of their pop-oriented blasphemy. Kidding, of course—everyone likes pop, including me. But I have a certain kind of passion for darkwave. Calm vocals, descending synthesizers that build up and create a fragmented atmosphere: “You can’t stop this motion“. This is the passionate delivery of Red Mecca. We’re in Nirvana now and don’t look any further. There’s only an hour or two left of this day, so embrace whatever they’re intending to give you. Exclusive Teasers: Steel Hook Prostheses – Rodent Ulcer (CDr)

Since their amazing epic of 2013; “The Empirics Guild“, Steel Hook Prostheses are coming back, stronger then ever. Symptomatic for their high-quality dark ambient, power electronics and noise. Their forthcoming release will be put out by 412Recordings. The “SHP”-logo and the prosthetic arm underneath it was designed by Cody Drasser, the man who might mainly be recognized for his contributions for the eminent web-zine Heathen Harvest.

The steel hook is clinging back to the harshly laden corrosive atmospheres, as their maniacal devotion reaches its peak. These acolytes of the sullen have made a sacrifice, once again. Offering up their slowly developing enigmatic sound, into both the long and outdrawn peripheral of every emoticon that is a shade less positive, and a tad more negative – yet ultimately blown out of proportions to serve as a cringing reminder of them being astray for a while. Metallic, incandescent, a totality of their channeled selves. One thing must be said, and that is their total passive-aggressiveness gets overloaded into the domains of a rough-cut diamond, that will serve as a static assault. The sublimity is here in abundance.

Those who serve Steel Hook Prostheses are going to get their full dosage rightfully so, before the release is out on the market. Digitally, we’ll force-feed you with everything you need to get your latest fix. They’re a lot more complex then a drug, and they’re for those whose heart is as molten; as their pieces of sonic decadence is. Those who should be stricken with fear is those whom are faint of heart. Now, in 2014, they will gain their rightful place once again. With the release “Rodent Ulcer“, which will hit you indiscriminately through their terrorizing landscape of sound, is due to be released in April. In the format of an extremely limited run of 100 CDr copies. Half of these copies will reside in the UK with 412Recordings for European listeners to buy, and the other half will be made available from Steel Hook Prostheses’ two members John Stillings and Lerry Kerr for the American audience, on Bandcamp in due time.

With one of the longer tracks they’ve created, namely the title-track of this release “Rodent Ulcer“, they grind your senses down into pitch-black blindness. Severing the normal routine of your autonomous system, making your irregular heartbeats bounce into near-death experiences. What’s more interesting is the sheer power of the atmospheres that are cast into this 16-minute maddening piece of music. Every step of the way is carefully monitored by yours truly, John Stillings and Larry Kerr. Piercing vocals, clandestine tools of their use produce waves of decrepit folds to lure you into. Insanity is a mild word to use for this absolute force that is plucking away at you. Claustrophobia steeped into both a miniscule sound-scape, but also a grandiose one. It’s strangely attracting, in a seductive way. Hypnotizing you. The other is a track called “Lice“, which is almost bordering to the territory of noise, as the static sound alters into rhythms of two, one which displays an outdrawn characteristic, the other tearing apart the first. Exclusive Premiere: Les Jumeaux Discordants – Betrayed Bride / The White Room

This is the continuation of the last post, where Les Jumeaux Discordants were kind enough to grant me access to their world – through their music. Providing me with a careful selection of tracks that might already be out there in some way or another, but mostly whom are restricted to this blog-zine as such – and their limited CDr-releases. The whole purpose of this was to grant people who may be interested in their music, something to listen to if they weren’t that quick to have bought their releases in the first place. These two tracks that I’m about to present to you, were featured on their first and only self-titled release “Les Jumeaux Discordants” – which was released by Misty Circles, in the format of a CDr limited to 100 copies. Alongside four other tracks. Displaying their underestimated experimentalism, as their first release. Engaging into more unknown territory, in comparison with the later releases. Honing what was to become a modern classical masterpiece, lending their thoughts deeper into their own imaginative state with this particular release. You can certainly hear the difference, albeit it’s sublimity. Venturing in between martial-industrialism, dark ambient and a more grandiose landscape of sound changing into the morbidity of the under-dwelling feelings, the suppressed and dark thoughts caught in the moment of them slowly being released into the world, with absolutely no embellishing filters.

One of the tracks are already out there more or less, but “The White Room” features a ‘ghost track’, also. Exclusive Premiere: Les Jumeaux Discordants – Stanze / Horus

If you’re in any way familiar with martial industrial and neo-classical music, you’d probably know about “Sang Pour Sang“, the debut-album by the duo Les Jumeaux Discordants. Released on the French label Athanor, whom dedicates itself to releasing occult ritual ambient and industrial music. It was released as a CD, limited to 500 copies, featuring thirteen tracks. Even though we’re lead astray by their venture into modern classical, rather than neo-classical, they’ve got hints of both martial industrial, neo-classical and modern classical. However, their first release wasn’t the one I mentioned either, because in 2007 they released their self-titled “Les Jumeaux Discordants” on Misty Circles. Featuring a more experimental approach then their full album. Roberto Del Vecchio and his partner-in-crime Aimaproject (Luisa Papa) constitute Les Jumeaux Discordants, as a duo. In 2012, both Robert and Luisa contributed to a compilation under the name of “Di Aima II Segno“, together with a whole roster of artists from both Old Europa Café, Steinklang, Hau Ruck! SPQR and other labelsEven though it’s a compilation, it can be said to be an anthology, a kind of tribute to the artists they’ve worked with. The compilation, or rather anthology, was released on the label Show Me Your Wounds Productions.

Together with Invisible Guy in a unique collaboration with Les Jumeaux Discordants, we aim to bring you the track “Horus” from this limited CDr compilation, but also “Stanze” – the martial-industrial counterpart, just to show you the complex nature of their music. It’s a channeling of both the vocal talent of Luisa Papa and the composition skills of Roberto Del Vecchio, as the old Europa awakes again, if only for a moment. The ritualistic nature of the track is both mesmerizing and brings a calmer dimension together with the more alarming and lurking feeling; of urgency. Together with the storm that brews with the simultaneous and rhythmic hits on the drums, as if it was a call to war. Stream this track exclusively down below.
